‘Googlen’ is een werkwoord geworden in onze taal, synoniem voor zoeken op het Web. Het probleem is dat we er zo kritiekloos mee omgaan, alsof Google alle antwoorden heeft. Ons vertrouwen in Google berust echter op een misvatting volgens Siva Vaidhyanathan, professor in de Bibliotheekwetenschappen:
“….We do not properly understand the nature of the nature of the transaction between us and Google. …into our relationship with Google we do not grasp that we are not really Google’s costumers. Google calls us users, but in fact we are Google’s products. Our attention is what Google sells to its customers, which are the advertisers.” (BBC interview)
We zijn dus geen klanten van Google, maar Google gebruikt onze argeloze aandacht en nieuwsgierigheid om zijn adverteerders te bedienen.
Volgens prominente linguisten zoals Arbib en Lakoff verklaren spiegelneuronen de biologische ontwikkeling van het menselijk taalvermogen (Arbib, 2005; Gallese, Lakoff, 2007). Ze maken het in alle geval mogelijk dat we elkaar begrijpen zelfs in dubbelzinnige situaties die weinig aanknopingspunten bieden. Omdat spiegelneuronen het mogelijk maken ons in de schoenen van iemand anders te plaatsen kunnen we ook zijn intenties begrijpen. Ook als we zoeken met Google maken we op een of andere manier onze intenties duidelijk. Google krijgt onze aandacht gratis. De vraag is schenkt Google ook aandacht aan ons, of loert het gewoon van achter een doorkijkspiegel naar ons terwijl het ons wat brokjes informatie toegooit die al of niet relevant zijn voor onze vraag. In a previous article we showed that Google is rather refraining the development of search technology instead of advancing it. But there is more. Google seems also to hide some undocumented search options. When you go to ‘advanced search’ you can use options like ’site:’ , ‘filetype:’, ‘allintitle:’ when you want to specify that you only want results from a specified domain, in a specified file type or only those who have your search term in the title. There is another undocumented option: ‘define:’
Its quite simple just type
define: adhd
define: swaps
define: schizophrenia
or another word you want the definition of and Google will return 10 to 20 definitions from trusted sites like Wikipedia, princeton.edu, Stanford.edu etc. You can even get those definitions in other languages like French, Italian, German or Russsian.
It’s a quick way to find a definition when you do not have the time to read the article in the Wikipedia. Read the rest of this entry »

Zonder vooroordelen
Om een dieper inzicht te krijgen in de problemen waarmee België momenteel wordt geconfronteerd, en die tot een splitsing kunnen leiden, is het nuttig een theoretisch onderzoek te doen naar de factoren die natievorming en nationalisme beïnvloeden en dus eventueel ook de teloorgang ervan kunnen veroorzaken. Om dit onderzoek een wetenschappelijk statuut te verlenen, moet het sine ira et studio gebeuren: men moet geen voorafgaande vooroordelen hebben betreffende het al dan niet positief of negatief karakter van nationalisme en ‘identiteit’ of voor het al dan niet voortbestaan van bepaalde staten.

Op 9 april is onze vriend en lid van de redactie Paul Verbraeken thuis overleden aan de gevolgen van een hersentumor. Hij was net 58 geworden. Met hem verliest links Vlaanderen één van zijn meest kritische denkers. Velen verliezen een goede vriend.
Paul Verbraeken werd vlak na de tweede wereldoorlog te Mortsel geboren als tweede kind van Rik en Anna. Rik Verbraeken was net teruggekeerd uit de kampen waar hij als politiek gevangene was opgesloten. Paul kreeg de naam van zijn door de Nazis vermoorde oom. Hij is in 1944 opgepakt en als politiek gevangene naar het concentratiekamp Dora gebracht en daar omgebracht. Men heeft er geen spoor van teruggevonden. Paul’s vader, Rik, is wel teruggekeerd en heeft de rest van zijn leven gezocht naar sporen van zijn jongere broer. Er is niets gevonden, maar hij kwam wel oog in oog te staan met één van de kampbewakers die intussen communistisch burgemeester in Oost-Duitsland was geworden. Ongegeneerd stalinisme.
Het antimilitarisme van de jeugd
Het verzet tegen fascisme en nazisme markeerde Paul. Het onnoembare van de nazi-gruwel die aan zijn naam kleefde zat diep in zijn lijf als een ding dat nooit helemaal is verteld. Het trauma werd het duidelijkst zichtbaar in de heftigheid van een paar van onze jeugdige fysieke confrontaties met de fascisten van nu. Strijd en verzet tegen elke vorm van dictatuur lagen aan de basis van zijn politieke bewustwording. In die zin lag zijn politieke leven in het directe verlengde van de linkerzijde uit de jaren dertig en veertig, in de solidariteit met de Spaanse strijders, in het verzet tegen het fascisme, waar naderhand ook naadloos een antistalinisme bij aansloot. When Google announced its integrated phone service called Google Voice Thursday, it said something very loud. Google is saying it wants to be the world’s communication hub, and hundreds of companies – ranging from mobile phone operators to Skype to Microsoft better be listening. Google wants it all.
Well lets first congratulate Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Calliau today at the 20th anniversary of the invention of the World Wide Web. Most people seem to have forgotten that it was originally designed as a collaborative tool at the CERN in Switserland. Tim Berners-Lee (see video) called it a Grassroot movement at the time. Today, if we let Google and other usurpators do, it is threathened to become a gigantic billboard along a deserted highway. We want Internet to be more intelligible and re-conquer the public space on the Net to stop the privatization of communication. Un récent article au titre racoleur prétend qu’il existe des backdoors dans Skype, permettant aux forces de police d’écouter les conversations.
Au delà du FUD, il me semble évident (compte-tenu des informations disponibles publiquement) qu’il est possible d’écouter une conversation Skype.
Parmi les arguments qui plaident en faveur de cette hypothèse:

De Franse privacywaakhond oordeelt vernietigend over de STIC-database. Door talloze fouten zijn meer dan 1 miljoen Fransen ‘gebrandmerkt’.
Een gigantische databank van de Franse politie zit zo stikvol fouten over wie verdacht of veroordeeld is voor een delict, dat hierdoor meer dan één miljoen Fransen ten onrechte hun baan hebben verloren of een baan nooit hebben gekregen.
Dat constateert de Franse privacytoezichthouder CNIL in een alarmerend rapport (pdf) dat het vorige week stuurde aan premier François Fillon.
De Franse politie heeft de afgelopen jaren een enorme databank opgezet met gegevens van verdachten, veroordeelden én slachtoffers. Le STIC (Système de traitement des infractions constatées) bevat momenteel data van ongeveer de helft van de Franse bevolking. Zo’n 100.000 politieambtenaren hebben routinematig toegang tot het systeem, dat per jaar circa 20 miljoen keer wordt geraadpleegd, in- en aangevuld.
83 procent fout
Maar bij dat laatste gaat het mis. In maar liefst 83 procent van alle entries in de databank staan fouten of onvolledigheden, van tikfouten tot dramatische blunders die het leven van talloze onschuldigen zwaar ten nadele hebben beïnvloed, concludeert CNIL. Read the rest of this entry »
